The Anambra State Government has urged voters to reject the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election.

The state government made the call in a post on its official X account, managed by the New Media office of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday.

The state government accused Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, of working to destroy the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party under which he governed the state, even as it claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had supported the party.

In a graphic describing Obi as a “betrayal”, the state government wrote: “A betrayal alert for Ndi APGA. Since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him.

“In 2015, while President Tinubu stood with APGA, Obi backed the opposition to bury us. Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home, resist the NDC.”

The development comes amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election and an increasingly strained relationship between Obi and Soludo.

In 2025, Soludo declared his support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election, citing his 22-year friendship with the president and the Federal Government’s economic reforms.

In July, APGA also endorsed Tinubu as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, who disclosed the decision, said the absence of the party’s presidential candidate’s name on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal should not be interpreted as non-compliance with electoral guidelines.

Opara said the party’s leadership had resolved to support Tinubu’s re-election bid after extensive consultations within its ranks.

He added that APGA’s National Executive Committee reached the decision after concluding that supporting the president’s second-term bid was in the overall interest of the country.

Meanwhile, Obi and Soludo have recently disagreed over financial obligations associated with projects implemented during Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Responding to the controversy, Obi said he had remained silent because he was mourning his late elder brother and friend, Chief Okey Ezeibe.

He also said he was not interested in returning to the governorship, even if the Constitution were amended to allow him to do so.

Obi rejected the description of the facilities as “debt owed by Peter Obi”, saying they were primarily World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development programmes negotiated by the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements.

He said the figures being cited should be separated into the amount approved, the amount actually drawn and the balance outstanding when he left office.

“The government has combined these distinct categories, added them together, and described the resulting US$123.77 million as ‘loans left by Peter Obi’. That is an incorrect application of public-sector accounting,” he argued.

Obi further maintained that he did not personally approach any financial institution to borrow funds or issue a bond on behalf of the state.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Obi nor any member of his team had reacted to the state government’s latest allegation of betrayal.
