Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has given consent for the release of his academic records, following reports of a legal action seeking certified copies of his educational credentials.

Obi, in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, said he had no objection to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), releasing his academic certificates, records and other official documents relating to his admission and studies, subject to applicable laws.

He said the same consent applied to other educational institutions he attended within and outside Nigeria, provided the release was carried out in accordance with relevant laws and procedures.

The statement followed reports circulating on social media about a legal action seeking certified true copies of Obi’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and other academic records connected to his admission into UNN.

“I wish to state clearly that I have absolutely no objection to the release of these records,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor said he welcomed legitimate public scrutiny of his background, qualifications and record as a presidential candidate, stressing that such scrutiny should be lawful, fair and applicable to all candidates.

He said individuals seeking the highest office in the country should be prepared to demonstrate that they had nothing to conceal from the public.

Obi subsequently challenged other presidential candidates to make their educational qualifications and relevant records available for public scrutiny.

According to him, such disclosure should be viewed as an opportunity to strengthen public confidence, promote accountability and restore Nigerians’ trust in those seeking political office.

He added that transparency, integrity and accountability should begin with those aspiring to lead the country.
