A small number of determined demonstrators on Saturday returned to the Kano streets, defying a curfew imposed by Governor Yusuf on Thursday.

The protesters, brandishing placards, gathered at Mandawari, Kofar Kwaru, and parts of the Nasarawa area of Kano State, chanting, “We would rather be killed by a bullet than killed by hunger.”

The #EndBadGovernance protests to demand good governance and improved economy entered the third day on Saturday.

The protest which began peacefully on Thursday turned violent at Sani Mainage, where unruly elements made bonfire and blocked major streets.

This led to a standoff with police operatives who in attempts to disperse the protesters, fired tear gas and warning shots into the air.

An eyewitness identified only as Ahmad, recounted the events to LEADERSHIP correspondent over the phone.

“No casualties have been reported so far. The miscreants who set the fires aren’t from this area; they came out and started causing mischief which led the police to start shooting,” Ahmad said.

He added that local residents assisted the police in chasing off the disruptive elements, restoring calm to the area.

LEADERSHIP reports that protesters shunned the curfew which remains in force as ordered by Governor Abba Yusuf across the state to curtail violence.

Pockets of persistent protesters however have continued to protest after the declaration of the curfew.
