Plateau United To Play Kano Pillars Behind Closed Doors

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, Plateau United have confirmed that their crucial Matchday 38 clash against Kano Pillars will be played behind closed doors.

The announcement, made in a statement cited security concerns as the primary reason for excluding fans from the high-stakes encounter at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.

The decision transforms what should have been a tense, atmospheric relegation battle into a ghostly affair. With both clubs still fighting for their top-flight lives, the absence of spectators adds an unusual layer of pressure players will hear every shout from the bench and every kick of the ball in near-silence, a far cry from the usual cauldron of Nigerian football.

For Plateau United, known as the Peace Boys, the equation is simple: only a win will guarantee their NPFL survival. Currently sitting 12th on the table with 47 points, they are just one point behind their visitors. A draw or defeat could see them tumble into the relegation zone, depending on other results.

Kano Pillars, in contrast, arrive in Jos with a slightly more comfortable but still precarious position. The four-time Nigerian champions are 10th with 48 points.

A draw would almost certainly be enough to keep them up, while a loss could drag them into the mire if other results go against them. Coach Gbenga Ogunbote’s men know that avoiding defeat is paramount.

The backdrop to this tension is a relegation landscape already partially settled. Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have both been confirmed as relegated to the second tier.

However, two more teams will join them by the end of Sunday’s fixtures, meaning that at least one of Plateau United or Kano Pillars could still suffer the drop—depending on the outcomes elsewhere in the league.

With no fans to cheer or jeer, Sunday’s match will be a raw test of nerve, discipline, and focus.

The decision to play behind closed doors, while disappointing for supporters, underscores the seriousness of the security assessment.
