Plateau Varsity Threatens Strike Over Non-Implementation Of 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University chapter, has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike over failure of the State Government to honour the 2025 agreement reached between the Federal Government and the union.

Chairperson of the union in the institution, Dr Vincent Choji, stated this during a press conference in Jos at the weekend.

The chairperson explained that members, during its congress held on May 13, unanimously resolved to embark on an industrial action.

Choji said the news briefing was a reminder to government to implement the agreement as was done in other public universities.

“We submitted the 2025 agreement reached between the federal government and ASUU to the university management in February.

“On May 18, we received a response stating that government was studying its content to take necessary steps towards its implementation, assessing the financial and administrative implications.

“We are concerned that six months after, these bureaucratic protocols are still being observed for a university that is lawfully autonomous.

“This news conference is one of the measures directed by the National Executive Council of ASUU, to remind the state government how the delay in the implementation of the agreement and others issues may lead to industrial disharmony,” he said.

Choji also called on the state government to address issues of pension and gratuity of its members and the victimisation of members by the university management, among others.

Also speaking, Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the former Zonal Coordinator, Bauchi Zone of the union, called on the Plateau state government to implement the agreement in order to avert industrial action.

“We have four federal and three state universities in the Bauchi zone. Out of these seven, only two state universities have not implemented the 2025 agreement and Plateau State University is one of them.

“So, while we are here on solidarity, we want to urge the state government to speedily implement the agreement to avert a looming, total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.

“We also appeal to parents and other stakeholders within and outside Plateau to engage the government over the matter,” he appealed.
