The police on Thursday arraigned a teacher at Christ Mitot School, Stella Nwadigbo, who was caught in a viral video assaulting a three-year-old pupil before a Lagos State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba for alleged assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
Nwadigbo, who resides at Isawo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was accused by the police of committing the offence on January 7th within the school premises.
The police prosecutor, Raji Akeem, an Assistant Inspector of Police, had informed Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu that the defendant was allegedly filmed slapping and punching the young boy while teaching him to write numerals.
Akeem also maintained that the offence violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Based on her plea, Magistrate Kushanu admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties of like amount.
She then adjourned the case to February 18 for mention and remanded the defendant in the custody of the Kirikiri Correctional Centre until the perfection of her bail terms.
LEADERSHIP reports that a viral video showing Nwadigo repeatedly slapping Abayomi while trying to teach him how to write the number six has sparked public outrage, resulting in widespread calls for justice.
Because of the incident, the school’s management suspended Nwadigo, and Abayomi is said to be hospitalised.
