Sixteen suspected cultists have been arrested with 21 others declared wanted by the Anambra State Police command.
The public relations officer (PPRO) of the state command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu who made this known in a statement to newsmen yesterday in Awka said that the out-going state commissioner of police, CP Aderemi Adeoye has ordered the operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) to go after the fleeing suspected cultists to ensure that they were brought to face the wrath of the law.
The arrest of the cultists and declaration of the fleeing others wanted were coming few days after the member representing Awka 1 constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Nigeria Mbachu raised an alarm over the escalation of cult activities in Awka, the state capital.
The legislator in a viral video had lamented that since this year’s Easter Sunday, over 34 persons have been killed in the state capital in clashes between opposing cultists.
Hon. Mbachu had called on community leaders and other influential people in Awka to come together to proffer solution to the menace of cultism in the area.
According to the PPRO, CP Adeoye has ordered the SPACS to go after cultists wherever they operate in the state.
