Police Arrest 30,313 Suspects In 2024

The inspector-general of police, IGP Olukayode Egbetekun, said the Force has arrested about 30,313 suspects in 2024 for their involvement in various crimes across the country.

The IGP stated this at the end-of-the-year press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.

Egbetokun, reeling out the police scorecard for 2024 during an end-of-year meeting with commissioners of police and strategic commanders in Abuja, further stated that 1,984 firearms were recovered the same year countrywide, and the police also recovered 23,250 rounds of ammunition.

The meeting, which took place at the Goodluck Ebele Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters Abuja, reviewed the Force‘s achievements in 2024 and outlined strategic plans for innovation and adaptability as the Force prepares for the coming year‘s challenges.

According to him, “in the year under review, the Nigeria Police Force recorded major successes in tackling crime, leading to the arrest of 30,313 suspects for various heinous offences, the recovery of 1,984 assorted firearms, 23,250 rounds of ammunition of varying calibres, and the rescue of 1,581 kidnapped victims.”

The IGP also stated that N12 billion was paid to 4,223 beneficiaries for life assurance in 2024, noting that the Force will focus more on welfare activities for the police in the coming year.

He acknowledged the hard work and dedication displayed by police officers throughout the year, particularly the significant accomplishments in crime reduction and community engagement. He noted the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering trust between the police and the public.

The IGP emphasised that the Force will prioritise innovation in technology and operational strategies in 2025, learning from experiences and adapting as we move on.

He also encouraged senior officers to embrace modern tools and progressive practices that enhance the Force’s effectiveness in crime prevention and investigation.

The IGP reiterates the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the public, ensuring safety, and fostering a culture of accountability.
