Three suspected armed robbers and a kidnapping suspect have been arrested by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command.
Police said the trio of Sunday Idoko, Gabriel Sunday and Olayiwola Olajide were reasonably suspected to be armed robbers and were apprehended along Awo/Igede Road last Saturday.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ekiti State Command, SP Sunday Abutu said the men were intercepted and arrested by operatives of the Safer Highway Unit on May 10, 2025, at about 10:30am during ‘stop and search’ operations along Awo/Igede-Ekiti Road.
The PPRO explained that the suspects, who were intercepted in a commercial vehicle, claimed they were traveling from Ondo State to Kwara State.
Abutu said it took the bravery and professional tactics of the operatives to arrest them as they initially tried to escape arrest by approaching the checkpoint at a high speed.
Spokesman of the police Command said investigations revealed that the suspects were members of a particular cult group who were traveling to Kwara State for an operation.
Items recovered from them include one locally made pistol concealed in a towel, two live cartridges, three phones, one power bank, a substance suspected to be a charm, and a cash sum of N155,000.
In another development, Abutu said one Abubakar Sadiu, suspected to be a kidnapper was arrested on Sunday May 11, 2025, around 11am by operatives of the Safer Highway Unit during ‘stop and search’ operation.
Abutu said the suspect, who attempted to bribe the policemen with a sum of N50,000 but was turned down and arrested, also claimed to be on his way to Kwara State from Ondo State but could not give a definite location in either state.
Items recovered from him include the cash sum of N397,000, 10kg of red oil, two smart phones, one head torch light, one lighter, an empty black bag and one black fez cap.
The PPRO said the four suspects were undergoing thorough investigation.
The Command also solicited the support and cooperation of the public at all times, including during ‘stop and search’ operations to succeed in the fight against crimes and criminality in the state.
