Borno State Police Command has arrested 537 suspects on various crimes comprising murder, inciting disturbance and causing grievous harm, house breaking and theft, vandalism and theft, kidnapping, and gender based violence among others and secured conviction of 250 suspects within the past three months.

The state commissioner of police (CP), Mohammed Lawan, who said this during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Maiduguri lauded Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration for reviewing the Borno Penal Code, which he observed facilitated the convictions and prescribed stiffer penalties for criminals.

He lauded Borno residents for being security conscious and providing prompt and useful information to the police for necessary action.

The CP said among the suspects arrested is 37-year-old Hamisu Dauda, of Panshani village in Shani LGA, who allegedly raped a 62-year-old woman and robbed her of N42,700.

He said there was also the case of 25-year-old Umar Goni, who stabbed one Zarami Modu, a 35-year-old man, for allegedly enticing his wife.

“The success recorded is as a result of the recently assented Borno State penal code law 2023 and other related matters therein, recently assented as part of the efforts of Governor of Borno State to ensure restoration of peace in the state for sustainable growth and development.

“However, there are incidences of public interest worthy of mentioning to serve as a deterrent and a warning to all criminally minded individuals, that they do not  have a space to nestle in Borno State; as nobody would escape the long hand of  the law once he is found culpable of committing any crime against persons or  properties, “ the CP said.
