The Police Command in Enugu State reported the arrest of a man for possessing and transacting in counterfeit naira notes within Enugu Metropolis.
This information was contained in a statement released by the command’s Spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday in Enugu.
Ndukwe stated that Police operatives serving in Awkunanaw Division, acting on a tip-off on December 19 at about 6:00 p.m., apprehended a male suspect identified as Chukwuebuka Igwebuike, 37, at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, Enugu.
“Recovered from him were suspected counterfeit N1000 Nigerian Naira notes, totaling N362,000.
“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that he used the fake one thousand Naira notes to buy items of small value and receive change in genuine smaller denominations.
“He will be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations are concluded,” he stated.
The command spokesperson mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, urged citizens and the public to be vigilant and cautious about receiving and exchanging any denominations of mint Nigerian Naira, especially during this yuletide season.
“He encourages the public to promptly report anyone in possession of, or dealing with counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes, to the nearest police station for necessary police action,” he added. (NAN)
