The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old father ablaze in Kazaure Local Government Area of the state.

The command, in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, described the incident as “a tragic and deeply disturbing” case of alleged patricide.

According to the statement, the police received a report on April 1, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m. from Lokon Malamai area via Magama Quarters in Kazaure town that “a 60-year-old was engulfed by fire suspiciously ignited by an unknown person.”

The police said a team was immediately deployed to the scene and the victim was taken to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary findings, however, indicated that the attack occurred earlier as “on the same date at about 0600hrs, an unidentified person poured a reasonable quantity of a flammable item, suspected to be petrol, on the victim’s body and set him ablaze.”

The statement added that, “in-depth surveillance and investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, identified as the biological son of the victim, who was found with several fresh fire burns and wounds on his forehead, arms, and toes.”

The victim was later referred to a higher medical facility but “sadly succumbed to the injuries sustained while receiving treatment,” the police said.

The command further stated that the suspect “is currently in custody and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.”

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, CP Haruna Alaba Yahaya, “condemns in strong terms this heinous act and assures the public that justice will be served.”

He also called on residents to “seek peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report any signs of domestic violence or conflict to the nearest police station,” while urging the public to remain calm as investigations continue
