A yet-to-be identified police officer has been detained by the Ekiti State police command for killing a young woman identified as Ifeoluwa Adekalu from an alleged accidental discharge in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

It was gathered that the tragic incident occurred at Okela police station of the town on Thursday.

The police officer, who was on a visit to the station, was alleged to have released the bullets while in joyous mood over the news of promotion of one of his colleagues which sadly hit the women.

There was, however, confusion over the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of the woman said to be a mother of one.

A source told our correspondent that the accidental discharge of the policeman, who was attached to another unit of the State Police Command, allegedly hit the victim in front of a saloon located opposite the police station while returning from where she went to pay her accommodation rent.

Another report has it that the woman came to the police station to see her husband who was in detention when the incident happened.

She was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital immediately, but later died.

The state’s Police Commissioner, AIG Adewale Adeniran, who confirmed the incident said the officer in question has been disarmed and detained.
