A philanthropist and businessman, Kingsley Wali, has declared that participation in active politics has distracted many youths in Rivers State from intellectual development.
Wali, who is also the founder of Education Champions League (ECL), made the assertion on a live radio programme monitored by LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
“Politics is distracting young people from intellectual development. When you go to the communities, you see young people who should be either in school or at work.
“Even if it means some menial jobs that will give them some money at the end of the day, or carpentry work or masonry work, or painting work or something, they just sit back.
“Because they believe that some leader is going to call them or wake up in the morning, take a bath, get dressed and move to somebody’s house, and you say, you are policing your leader to do exactly what?” he said.
The philanthropist stated that the ECL was initiated to encourage reading among young people, saying that anyone who does not read cannot provide good leadership.
Wali said, “Life is about leading by example, and if you don’t read, you can’t lead well,” he said.
