Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, has expressed concerns over the recent wave of attacks on communities in Nigeria.

Daily Trust had reported how at least 100 persons were murdered in Woro and neighbouring communities, in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday.

Local authorities in the communities said at least 75 residents were buried on Wednesday and 13 others on Thursday following the deadly attacks.

Several other persons have been declared missing as the incident continued to generate widespread condemnation within and outside the country.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, the pontiff said he received news of the violence with sorrow and concern.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria, leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism,” he wrote.

He urged authorities to intensify efforts to ensure the safety and protection of every Nigerian.

“I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he added, using the hashtag #PrayTogether.

Pope’s comment comes after the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned the attacks, saying the UN was in solidarity with Nigeria and supports the government’s efforts to combat terrorism.
