The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, has described poverty as one of the significant barriers hampering the realization of fundamental human rights, such as the right to adequate standard of living, healthcare and education by many Nigerians.

A press statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, NHRC, Mr. Agarese Arase, revealed that Ojukwu disclosed this on Wednesday at commemoration of the International Day for Eradication of Poverty, which comes up on October 17 every year.

The NHRC boss, while calling on government and relevant stakeholders to join hands in eradicating poverty in the country, queried why poverty continues to be a pervasive issue affecting a substantial portion of the population.

He said poverty limits individuals’ access to basic necessities of life which are essential components of the rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In the context of poverty and its impact on human rights, Ojukwu noted that the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria has added a significant burden to Nigerians.

“The Commission recognises that the removal of fuel subsidy is a complex and challenging economic decision, but it has had a detrimental effect on the lives of many Nigerians. It has led to a sharp increase in the cost of living, including transportation and food prices. This has resulted in financial strain and has reduced the ability of individuals and families to access basic services.

“The Commission acknowledges the need for economic reforms, but we call upon the government to consider the human rights implications of such decisions and ensure that they do not disproportionately affect the most vulnerable in our society. The government must also intensify efforts in implementing programs that alleviate poverty and ensure that the basic human rights of every Nigerian are upheld,” he stated.
