Nottingham Forest strengthened their fight for Premier League survival with a hard-earned draw against Aston Villa, moving three points clear of the relegation zone.
Managed by VÃtor Pereira, Forest showed resilience to come from behind at the City Ground, with Neco Williams cancelling out an unfortunate own goal by Murillo.
Villa made a bright start despite losing goalkeeper Emiliano MartÃnez to injury during the warm-up, with Marco Bizot stepping in. The visitors took the lead when Murillo inadvertently turned Morgan Rogers’ cross into his own net.
Rogers nearly doubled Villa’s advantage soon after, striking the crossbar and later missing another opportunity, as the visitors pushed to assert control.
Forest, however, responded with determination. Williams brought the hosts level seven minutes before the break, rifling a low effort into the net from 18 yards to ignite the home crowd.
The second half saw both sides create chances in an open contest. Bizot produced a fine save after a deflection off Matty Cash threatened Villa’s goal, while Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels denied John McGinn with an excellent stop.
Villa came closest to snatching victory late on, but Rogers fired over from close range, while Ollie Watkins also missed a chance as he chased his 100th goal for the club.
The result extends Forest’s unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions, offering renewed belief as they battle to avoid relegation. With a crucial home fixture against second-bottom Burnley looming, Forest now hold their fate firmly in their own hands.
Attention will also turn to Europe, with a UEFA Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash against Porto on Thursday. A positive outcome in both competitions could cap a defining week for Pereira’s side as they edge closer to safety and potential continental success.
