Gary Lineker has accused Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta of adopting Sir Alex Ferguson-style tactics in a bid to secure the Premier League title.
The Gunners are strong favourites to end their long wait for league glory, holding a nine-point lead at the top with seven matches remaining.
However, a recent Carabao Cup final defeat served as a reminder of Manchester City’s threat, particularly with Pep Guardiola’s side holding a game in hand ahead of a crucial meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
Several Arsenal players—including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, William Saliba and Gabriel—have withdrawn from international duty, fuelling speculation over fitness concerns.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker suggested the withdrawals may not be coincidental.
“I think Arteta is playing a Sir Alex role here,” he said, referencing Ferguson’s history of encouraging players to skip friendlies to preserve fitness.
