In a tense, rain-soaked final at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Saturday, El-Kanemi Warriors etched their name deeper into Nigerian football history, clinching their fourth President Federation Cup crown with a gritty 1-0 triumph over gallant Ikorodu City.
The solitary strike, a coolly converted 13th-minute penalty by midfielder Muktar Ismail, proved the difference between the two sides, delivering the Maiduguri-based “Borno Army” their second title in three years and a prized ticket to next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
The match began at a frantic pace, with Ikorodu City showing no signs of final-day nerves. The Lagos outfit, still smarting from their last-gasp failure to secure a continental slot in the NPFL playoffs, pressed high early on, forcing El-Kanemi’s defence into hurried clearances.
But it was the Warriors who drew first blood against the run of play. A swift counter-attack down the right flank saw winger Sadiq Abubakar drive into the box, only to be clumsily tripped by Ikorodu’s veteran centre-back, Chinedu Okafor. Referee Adebayo Olawale pointed straight to the spot without hesitation.
Ismail, who had been calm from 12 yards throughout the tournament, stepped up with the composure of a seasoned assassin. He sent Ikorodu’s goalkeeper, Oluwaseun Adebayo, the wrong way, slotting low into the left corner while the shot-stopper dived right.
The yellow-clad El-Kanemi contingent erupted, their drummers pounding out a celebratory rhythm that echoed across the damp Delta stands.
The remainder of the first half was a tactical chess match. Ikorodu City, under the guidance of coach Yinka Durojaiye, abandoned their earlier caution and threw bodies forward.
Winger Michael Ogunleye tormented El-Kanemi’s left-back with his pace, whipping in dangerous crosses, but the Warriors’ towering centre-half pairing of Hassan Ibrahim and Victor Nnamdi headed, blocked, and booted away every aerial threat with defiant resilience.
Just before the break, Ikorodu had their best chance—a curling 25-yard free-kick from playmaker Ifeanyi Nwakali that forced El-Kanemi’s goalkeeper, Abubakar Idris, into a spectacular fingertip save onto the crossbar.
The second half descended into a war of attrition, with both sides visibly fatigued under Asaba’s oppressive humidity. El-Kanemi coach Ladan Bosso made a defensive substitution on the hour mark, introducing rugged midfielder Ali Goni to shield his backline, effectively ceding possession to Ikorodu City and daring them to break through.
The strategy paid off, as the Warriors’ deep-lying block frustrated wave after wave of Ikorodu attacks. In the 78th minute, Ikorodu’s substitute striker, John Ezeh, thought he had equalised with a powerful header from a corner, but the linesman’s flag was already up for offside—a decision that sparked furious protests from the Ikorodu bench.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Ikorodu City threw everything forward, including their goalkeeper for a desperate last-minute corner. The delivery was met by Okafor’s head, but his glancing effort sailed just wide of the post, sending a collective gasp through the neutral fans.
Seconds later, the final whistle blew, and El-Kanemi’s players collapsed to the turf in tears of joy, while their opponents slumped to their knees, the weight of a season that promised so much but delivered nothing—neither the NPFL continental spot nor this cup—crushing their spirits.
For El-Kanemi Warriors, this victory is more than just silverware. It marks their fourth overall triumph in Nigeria’s oldest football competition (having previously won in 1991, 1992, and 2024).
For Ikorodu City, however, it was a cruel double blow. Having missed out on a Confederation Cup berth on the final NPFL matchday just a week prior, they now exit the Federation Cup empty-handed, left to rue what might have been.
Their fairytale debut season in the top flight ends not with a trophy, but with the bitter taste of what-if—a lesson in the fine margins that separate glory from heartbreak in Nigerian football.
