Prince Nico Mbarga (1950-1997) was a prominent Cameroonian-Nigerian highlife musician, famously known for his timeless hit song “Sweet Mother.” Born on January 1, 1950, in Abakaliki, Nigeria, to a Cameroonian father and Nigerian mother, his upbringing in a culturally diverse environment profoundly influenced his unique musical style.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings:

Born January 1, 1950, in Abakaliki, Nigeria.
His father was a Cameroonian migrant, and his mother was a Nigerian trader, fostering a rich cultural blend in his upbringing.

Developed a profound passion for music during his school years, mastering the guitar and piano.

Honed his skills as a “band boy” for a Congolese band, where he immersed himself in Congolese rumba.

Became a multi-talented instrumentalist, proficient in playing the xylophone, conga, drums, organ, bass guitar, and electric guitar.

Musical Career and “Sweet Mother”

Debuted professionally with the Melody Orchestra in 1970.

Formed his own band, Rocafil Jazz, after the Nigerian Civil War.

His signature song, “Sweet Mother,” released in 1976, became an instant classic. It was widely praised for its heartfelt tribute to mothers and its irresistibly catchy melody.

The song achieved monumental success, selling over 13 million copies and earning him the revered title “Father of Modern Highlife.” It remains one of the best-selling African songs of all time.

Later Career and Legacy:

Despite the global phenomenon of “Sweet Mother,” Mbarga’s subsequent releases didn’t quite match its unparalleled success.
He established his own record label, distributed by Polydor, but later parted ways with Rocafil Jazz.

Continued to perform with the New Rocafil Jazz Band, though he couldn’t replicate his earlier peak.
