Pro-Tinubu Group Extends Welfare Outreach To FCT Transporters

A pro-Tinubu group, Transporters for Tinubu 2027, has extended its free medical outreach to commercial drivers at Dei-Dei Motor Park in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with plans to introduce soft loan schemes for transport workers.

The outreach, tagged Drivers’ Care Initiative, forms part of an ongoing programme aimed at improving the health and welfare of transport operators across the FCT, following similar exercises at Jabi Motor Park and other locations.

The initiative focuses on free eye testing and treatment, sensitisation on drug abuse, and access to low-interest loans through the Transporters Cooperative Society.

Speaking at the event, Programme Director, Mrs. Chinwe Uwaegbute, said the initiative was designed to address critical health and welfare challenges faced by commercial drivers.

“Transportation is central to national development, and drivers play a vital role in keeping the economy running. However, the nature of their job exposes them to fatigue and health challenges that can impact road safety,” she said.

Uwaegbute stressed that regular eye examinations are essential in preventing road accidents.

“Drivers may be familiar with their routes, but that confidence must be supported by routine medical checks. We are here to ensure their vision and general health are in good condition,” she added.

She noted that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in the areas of human capacity development and social welfare.

An optometrist, Dr. Kelechi, conducted free eye examinations for drivers and provided treatment for vision-related conditions that could affect safe driving.

Also speaking, Andy Okoho, a representative of the Transporters Cooperative, outlined financial benefits available to members, including savings plans for vehicle acquisition, emergency funds and access to low-interest loans within 48 hours.

He added that the cooperative operates a digital platform that enables members to track their savings through a mobile application.

Officer Ndubuisi Agabus of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) cautioned drivers against drug abuse, linking substance use to road accidents and other criminal activities.

He warned against excessive consumption of alcohol, kolanut and high-dose Tramadol, noting that the 250mg variant of the drug is banned due to its harmful effects.

“When a driver takes such substances, perception and judgment can be impaired, increasing the risk of accidents,” he said, urging transport unions to partner with the agency in sensitising members.

Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), FCT Chapter, Alhaji Musa Saidu, commended the initiative and expressed support for President Tinubu’s transport-related policies, including fare relief measures and the introduction of CNG buses.

He urged drivers to prioritise safety and avoid drug abuse, while calling on organisers to sustain the programme for the long-term benefit of transport workers.

The Drivers’ Care Initiative is expected to continue across motor parks in the FCT in the coming days as the group intensifies engagement with transport unions and grassroots stakeholders.
