Prof. Steve Sinikiem Azaiki, OON, is a Nigerian leader whose head fits and wears many caps of honour. He is an academic, agronomist, public administrator, author and politician whose career spans higher education, public service, environmental advocacy and legislative leadership.
To many of his admirers, Azaiki is one of Nigeria’s foremost intellectuals, who has built a reputation for combining scholarship with governance and for making major contributions to education, agriculture, public policy and Niger Delta development.
Azaiki is a professor of Conflict and Crisis Management and International Relations at the Ukrainian Academy of Personnel Management and International Relations and a visiting scholar/fellow of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, University of Port Harcourt.
He attended Harvard University, Oxford University and University of Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Born in Yenebebeli-Atissa, Yenagoa local government area of Bayelsa State, Prof. Azaiki attended St. Peter’s Primary School, Yenagoa, before proceeding to Bishop Dimeari Grammar School and Government Secondary School, Kaiama, where he obtained an outstanding West African School Certificate. He later pursued higher education in Ukraine and other countries, earning Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Crop Science from the Agricultural Academy in Kyiv (now the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine).
He expanded his academic credentials with an MBA in Project Management from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, a PhD in Public Administration from the Ukrainian Regional University of Personnel Management, and later advanced qualifications in Personnel Management. Azaiki also undertook executive leadership and management programmes at internationally recognised institutions.
Azaiki began his professional career as a science teacher before joining the federal civil service, where he rose through the ranks to become a director in the National Directorate of Employment (NDE). During his years in public service, he served in Rivers and Oyo States, where he contributed to employment generation and youth empowerment programmes before retiring in 2007.
His transition into state administration coincided with the creation of Bayelsa State, where he served as the state’s pioneer commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources and later twice as secretary to the state government (SGF) under the administration of the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. In these capacities, he played important roles in policy formulation, institutional development and administrative reforms. He also served in advisory capacities to successive governments in Bayelsa State, particularly on agriculture, education and capacity development.
At the national level, Azaiki served as special adviser to several federal ministers, including those overseeing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Affairs and Youth Development. His expertise also earned him appointments to governing councils of tertiary institutions, notably the Federal University of Technology, Akure. His experience in governance culminated in his election to the House of Representatives, where he represented the Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). As a legislator, he focused on youth empowerment, constituency development, healthcare support, education and infrastructure.
An accomplished academic, Prof. Azaiki has taught and held professorial appointments in agronomy, conflict resolution, public administration and international relations. His academic engagements have included teaching and research in Ukraine as well as fellowship positions in Nigeria. His scholarly interests cover agriculture, governance, environmental management, conflict resolution and sustainable development.
Azaiki is also a prolific author. His publications examine the political economy of Nigeria’s oil industry, environmental justice, federalism and governance. Among his notable books are “Inequities of Oil Politics in Nigeria, Oil Politics and Blood, The Evil of Oil, Oil, Gas and Life in Nigeria, and Oil, Democracy and the Promise of True Federalism in Nigeria”. These works have established him as an important voice on Niger Delta affairs and resource governance.
Beyond government and academia, Azaiki has demonstrated a strong commitment to philanthropy and institution-building. Through the Azaiki Foundation, he established the Azaiki Public Library and the Azaiki Art Gallery and Museum in Yenagoa, institutions dedicated to promoting literacy, preserving cultural heritage and supporting research. He has also sponsored scholarships, supported community development initiatives and championed environmental sustainability across the Niger Delta.
His contributions have attracted national and international recognition. He is a recipient of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and has held leadership positions in several professional and civil society organisations. In 2026, he was appointed director of the Centre for Polish and African Affairs at the University of Communication and Management (WSKiZ), Poznań, Poland, reflecting growing international recognition of his expertise in education, governance and international cooperation. The same year, he was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
He served as the inaugural president of the Nigerian Chapter of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption, representing Nigeria within this global movement for ethical governance. He was later appointed an Executive Member of the Board of Governors and Vice Chairman of the World Bank/IMF Parliamentary Network, a role that enabled him to participate directly in international fact-finding missions to Morocco, Ukraine, and other strategic jurisdictions.
Between 2017 and 2020, he was the pro-chancellor and chairman of the Governing Council of Niger Delta University, and as a Trustee of Hensard University, Toru-Orua, Bayelsa State.
