A rainstorm has hit Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, causing widespread destruction in the Bukuru community.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the rainstorm yesterday destroyed several houses, including the Jos South Council Secretariat gate.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Jos South LGA, Silas Patrick Dung, confirmed the development to newsmen in Jos.
According to the Chairman, the storm was powerful, uprooting the entire four columns holding the Secretariat gatehouse and destroying some homes in the community.
“For the storm to destroy the Council Secretariat gate built with a 25mm rod tells you it must be a powerful rainstorm,” he said.
Dung, who visited the affected areas with officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), reported that about six houses were destroyed, several others had roofs blown off, and fences were damaged.
“From what we can ascertain, we have counted about six destroyed houses. We are still going around the community and waiting to hear from other locations if the extent of the damage is more than what we can assess now,” Dung explained.
The chairman described the damage from the strong winds as a natural disaster.
“It’s a storm that caused havoc… So, it is a natural disaster and not man-made because there is nothing anyone could have done to stop the storm. The local government is working to assess the full extent of the damage and provide support to affected residents”, he added.
The chairman assured the council would take necessary steps to prevent further risks and damage to the vandalised structures.
“We are trying to pull down the structure to avert further risk that the vandalised part will cause to the people,” Dung stated.
