Rangers, who lifted the NPFL title last season, were unable to mark their title defence with victory at home as Katsina United secured a valuable point in Enugu.

The result was one of the notable outcomes from an opening weekend that produced goals and several closely contested encounters across the country.

In Ilorin, Kano Pillars also began their campaign with an important point after playing out a 2-2 draw with hosts Kwara United.

Rivers United made a strong start to the new season, defeating Plateau United 2-0, while Shooting Stars edged Inter Lagos 2-1.

Barau announced their arrival with an impressive 3-1 victory over Nasarawa United, while Bendel Insurance overcame Warri Wolves 2-1.

Niger Tornadoes also claimed maximum points after defeating Enyimba 2-1 in another closely fought encounter.

Ikorodu City produced one of the weekend’s biggest wins, beating Ranchers Bees 3-1, while Doma United secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Sporting Lagos.

The remaining Matchday 1 fixture between Abia Warriors and Kun Khalifat is scheduled for Monday, August 31.
