Reconciliation: Emulate Alia, Akume, Arewa Think Tank Tells Feuding Politicians

The Arewa Think Tank has called on feuding politicians to emulate Benue state governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume’s recent reconciliation and peace deal to resolve disagreements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued and signed by its Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, on Monday, the group described the reconciliation between the two Benue leaders as “a timely and commendable development” capable of strengthening party cohesion and governance if replicated nationwide.

Alia and Akume had been locked in a prolonged political rift that spanned nearly three years, creating divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State.

The two Benue APC leaders ended their differences on May 3, 2026, during a peace parley at the Government House in Makurdi on Sunday.

Reacting to the development, the Arewa Think Tank said the resolution of the dispute underscores the importance of dialogue in Nigeria’s often fractious political environment.

“Political disagreements are inevitable in a democracy, but the ability to resolve them in the interest of the people is what defines leadership.

“The example set by Governor Alia and the SGF should serve as a template for other leaders who remain locked in protracted conflicts,” the group said.

The group warned that unresolved political feuds could weaken party structures and undermine electoral prospects, particularly as attention gradually shifts toward the 2027 elections.

“Disunity within parties not only affects governance but also erodes public confidence. Leaders must prioritise collective interests over personal differences,” the statement added.

Arewa Think Tank noted that the reconciliation in Benue could have broader implications for the APC, especially in states where internal divisions persist.

“The Alia-Akume truce sends a signal that even deeply entrenched disputes can be resolved when there is political will.

“We are glad that supporters of both leaders have also welcomed the development, an indication that the renewed alliance will bring stability to governance in the state and strengthen the APC’s position ahead of upcoming elections,” the statement said.

The Arewa Think Tank further urged political stakeholders across northern Nigeria and beyond to adopt similar approaches, stressing that unity remains critical to national stability.

“As Nigeria’s political landscape begins to realign ahead of 2027, the reconciliation between Alia and Akume stands out as a rare instance of rapprochement, one that could reshape party dynamics if its lessons are widely embraced,” the statement added.
