DR Congo marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with a spirited performance, holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw in their Group K opener and frustrating Cristiano Ronaldo’s side in a hard-fought contest.

Portugal pushed hard for a winner after the break, with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva attempting to unlock the Congolese defence, but clear-cut chances proved difficult to come by. DR Congo remained compact and dangerous on the break, showing little sign of being overawed by their illustrious opponents.

As frustration mounted for Portugal, late yellow cards for Nélson Semedo and Tomás Araújo reflected their growing desperation to find a decisive goal.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable result for DR Congo, who secured a point on their return to football’s biggest stage and demonstrated they are capable of competing with the world’s elite.
