Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, has cautioned supporters against expecting a Premier League title challenge next season, despite Michael Carrick’s permanent appointment. The Red Devils recently confirmed Carrick will continue at the helm, having penned a long-term contract following an impressive interim spell.

Under Carrick’s guidance, United secured 12 wins from 17 matches, ultimately finishing third in the league and guaranteeing Champions League football. However, Rooney remains unconvinced that his former club will be genuine title contenders in the upcoming campaign.

He articulated his reservations, stating: “We all want them to win the league, but you have to be realistic and say, are they going to win the league? Are they going to win the Champions League? I think it’s going to be very difficult, but trying to get an improvement.” Rooney’s comments suggest a belief that while progress has been made, bridging the gap to the very top of English and European football will require more than a single season under Carrick.
