The Rotary Club of Abuja Highrise has donated a solar-powered borehole and food processing equipment to Yimitu community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

The items include cassava, maize and beans grinding machines, as well as two large aluminium refuse bins to improve livelihoods and sanitation in the area.

At the presentation, Dr Princess Joy Nky Okoro, the district governor of Rotary International District 9127 (2025–2026), said the project was funded through a Rotary Foundation grant.

Okoro explained that the intervention followed a needs assessment conducted by the Rotary Club of Abuja Highrise to determine the community’s most pressing challenges.

“This project is about empowerment and sustainability. It provides clean water, food processing equipment and agricultural support to help this community improve its quality of life,” she said.

She added that the funding did not come from government coffers but from contributions made by Rotarians to the Rotary Foundation, noting that similar projects were being implemented across Abuja.

According to her, each Rotary club in the Federal Capital Territory has adopted a community to support as part of a coordinated effort involving over 50 clubs.

Okoro said community members had been incorporated into monitoring committees to ensure proper use and maintenance of the facilities.

Also, a past district governor, Mike-Ukachi Nwanoshiri, said the solar borehole addressed a critical need for clean water in Yimitu Community.

He noted that the project aligned with Rotary International’s focus on water, sanitation and hygiene, adding that the solar system was installed due to the absence of a regular electricity supply.

Nwanoshiri disclosed that the borehole project, including drilling, solar installation, tank and accessories, cost about N8.7 million.

In his remarks, the village head of Yimitu Ward, Chief Dauda Ibrahim, thanked the club for the intervention, describing it as unprecedented in the community.
