Rotary Club Targets Safer Motherhood, Child Welfare With Gwarinpa Health Outreach

The Rotary Club of  Gwarinpa, Abuja, has strengthened efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare by providing health education, medical support and essential supplies to pregnant women, nursing mothers and their babies in its host community.

The outreach, held as part of Rotary International’s July focus on maternal and child health, took place at the Primary Health Centre in Gwarinpa, Abuja, where beneficiaries received healthcare guidance and materials to support safe pregnancy and child care.

Speaking during the programme, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa, Rotarian Kenneth Amadi, said the initiative was part of the club’s humanitarian service aimed at improving the wellbeing of vulnerable members of the community.

He explained that Rotary’s new service year begins in July, with maternal and child health selected as the club’s first major project for the year.

According to him, the club partnered with the Primary Health Centre in Gwarinpa village, a government health facility, to complement existing efforts by providing health education, medical advice, drugs and other essential materials for pregnant women, nursing mothers and their children.

“We are here to give pregnant women and nursing mothers a helping hand. We want to educate them, advise them and provide medical materials that will support them through antenatal care, delivery and postnatal care,” Amadi said.

He added that the club’s humanitarian activities go beyond healthcare, noting that it also supports education and community development through initiatives such as scholarships for indigent pupils, provision of libraries, toilets and water facilities in schools.

Also speaking, Vice President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa, Rotarian Angela Agbayekhai, said the outreach demonstrated the club’s commitment to protecting lives and supporting families.

She stressed that maternal and child health remained a priority because mothers and children are critical to the future of society.

“We take this project very seriously because it deals with human lives. Our mothers and children are the future leaders. Without children, there will be no next generation to take over,” she said.

Agbayekhai disclosed that the club had outlined several projects for the new Rotary year, including interventions to support indigent children in primary schools, keep children in school and implement community development programmes.

A beneficiary of the outreach, Blessing Chimeze commended the Rotary Club for the initiative, describing the programme as enlightening and beneficial to mothers.

She said the health education provided useful information on parenting and child development, while urging society to pay equal attention to both the girl child and the boy child.

According to her, boys also require proper guidance, protection and support because they are increasingly exposed to social challenges.

She thanked the Rotary Club for educating mothers and providing knowledge that would help them raise healthier and more responsible children.

The outreach forms part of the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa’s humanitarian programmes for the new Rotary year, focusing on healthcare, education, community development and improving the quality of life of residents.
