The 12th President of Rotary Club Abuja Maitama, Rotn. Agwu Ijeoma Joyce has said that the club has proposed to spend over N18 million on humanitarian service in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the club’s new calendar year.
Agwu, who spoke in Abuja over the weekend during her investiture and members of her executives for the 2023/2024 year, explained that some of the planned projects include peace outreach to Kuje Correctional Centres for select Secondary Schools (Multi-District Initiative); construction of Special Toilets in Solar Powered Borehole in a Boarding Girls Secondary School (CC).
Others are building and equipping the Maternity Wing in Galuwyi PHC; presentation of birthing kits to pregnant women in Asokoro General Hospital; N10,000 Grant to 10 indigent roadside vendors, the introduction of WASH Clubs in a public Secondary school in Piakasa, Abuja among others.
Agwu, who took over from Rotn. Yusuf Alli, the Managing Editor, of Northern Operations of the Nation Newspapers, said she would consolidate on the achievements of the past presidents of the club and embark on an aggressive membership drive.
“Our club is an award-winning club. And I’m going to leap the immediate past president and past presidents of our club. God is on our side. That is all I can say. We have already commenced action on the girl-child initiative. This is the month of child health, and we have started projects toward that
“We must ensure adequate funding, strengthen partnerships, and leverage the resources available through Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation by diversifying sources, we can expand our inputs to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
“Additionally, active participation in the District is vital to our growth and influence. These programmes provide opportunities for collaboration, learning, and networking,” she said.
Also speaking, the former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, who chaired the event, called on Nigerians to identify with the Rotary Club because of its commitment to serving humanity.
Anyim further pledged to support the Rotary Club Abuja Maitama and offered to sponsor one project for the club during its 2023/2024 year.
The 11th president of the club, Rotn. Yusuf Ali had presented Agwu as his successor for investiture and thereby solicited support for her to actualize all her outlined projects for the Rotary year.
