The Rotary Club of Maiduguri has launched a dual-pronged education initiative to support both schoolchildren and adult learners in Borno State.

The organisation distributed learning materials to over 600 students at Jajel Junior Secondary School in Njimtilo, on the outskirts of the state capital, Maiduguri, yesterday.

The donation included exercise books and writing materials, with specific merit-based rewards given to high-performing pupils.

The outreach programme is part of the club’s District 9127 Education and Literacy project for the 2025-2026 year.

Club president, Abdulkareem Haruna, described the intervention as a strategic investment rather than a simple charity.

Addressing the assembly, Mr Haruna urged students to view their education as a foundation for future citizenship.

“Your future rests on the way you pursue your education at a young age,” he said.

To encourage academic competition, the top 30 students across various classes received branded bags and comprehensive learning aids.

The club’s initiative was extended beyond the conventional classroom to the Borno State Agency for Mass Literacy, where the club provided supplies to adults seeking a second chance at education.

Officials at the agency welcomed the move, noting that adult education centres often receive less attention from donor organisations than primary and secondary schools.

The principal of Jajel Junior Secondary School, Aishatu Maigairi Ahmed, commended the effort, noting that while the state government, led by Governor Babagana Zulum, has made significant strides in the sector, support from civil society remains crucial.

“Government cannot do it alone. Support from organisations like Rotary goes a long way in empowering our children,” she said.

The Rotary Club stated that the project was funded entirely by voluntary contributions from its members.
