A leading commercial law firm in Nigeria, AELEX, has stated that the rule of law is not merely a human rights or political issue but a critical factor for economic growth and development.
The managing partner of AELEX, Adedapo Tunde-Olowu (SAN), stated this at a press conference to announce the 19th edition of the firm’s annual lecture, with the theme “Rule of Law and Economic Development: The Nigerian Experience.”
Tunde-Olowu also pointed out that it is clear that without order, Nigeria’s aspirations for meaningful change will never materialise.
He further maintained that the rule of law is not merely a legal construct but the foundation upon which economic progress, investor confidence, and sustainable prosperity rest.
The senior lawyer said the lecture has become one of the country’s most respected intellectual gatherings over the past two decades, bringing together stakeholders in law, governance, business, and civil society.
Tunde-Olowu revealed that the keynote address of this year’s lecture, which will take place on Tuesday, October 14, will be delivered by the former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN.
He also stressed that a high-level panel of discussants, including the Director General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Chinyere Almona; Chairman, Bi-Courtney Group, Dr Wale Babalakin, SAN; Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company, Mr Bismarck Rewane; and journalist and public affairs analyst, Dr Reuben Abati, will be in attendance.
Also speaking at the event, Prof. Fubara Anga (SAN), a senior partner at AELEX, said that the lecture provides a nonpartisan space for honest engagement on issues of national importance.
“While participants may not always agree, the platform’s credibility ensures robust, respectful debate,” Anga said.
He added that this year’s discussion will spotlight practical issues such as property rights, the sanctity of contracts, regulatory powers, and dispute resolution, all crucial for attracting investment and driving Nigeria’s economic revival.
