The gale of endorsements for the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Hamzat, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election on Monday got to its apogee as the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, threw his weight behind his deputy as the preferred successor for the 2027 gubernatorial race.

The endorsement came after Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the state’s top seat during a closed-door session attended by members of the state executive council and key political figures.

Among those present were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, as well as other party leaders.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as a capable and experienced leader who had earned the administration’s confidence after serving as deputy governor for 7 years.

“We just received Mr Deputy, who came with a strong delegation of leaders to inform us of his intention to contest, ” the Governor said formally.

“It was unanimous among us that the deputy governor is fit and well-prepared for this role. He understands the workings of government and has demonstrated integrity, loyalty and commitment at the highest level.”

Sanwo-Olu added that Hamzat’s experience within the administration positions him as a ready successor, noting that his contributions to governance have been significant.

“This is a deputy governor who is already governor material from day one. He has been built for this responsibility, and I believe he deserves the opportunity to lead Lagos at this point,” he said. The Governor also acknowledged the role of party leadership and national figures in nurturing the political partnership, expressing appreciation for what he described as a long-term vision now coming to fruition.

The aspiration of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, to succeed his principal also received a boost as the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila expressed his full support for the governorship ambition of the aspirant.

Responding to Hamzat’s request for support, Gbajabiamila, while testifying to Hamzat’s capacity and competence to govern Lagos State, said there’s no doubt that Lagos is in safe hands.

He said, “Dr Hamzat, you are a man of honour, and it shows by not taking things for granted, judging by this consultation move. But I am saying it publicly that you can take me for granted because I have confidence in your ability and capacity. So, take my support for granted. My constituency, Surulere, is for you, and Lagos is for you”, said Gbajabiamila.

In the same vein, the immediate past Finance and Coordinating Minister, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Wale Edun, has also endorsed Hamzat for the Lagos top job.

To Mr Wale Edun: Hamzat’s consultations show grassroots democracy in action, and such engagement is vital in a democratic system.

Edun didn’t mince words in support of Hamzat and said, “You have our endorsement. You have the capacity, experience and competence to lead, “urging the aspirant to focus on poverty reduction and sustained economic growth.

Hamzat’s declaration and subsequent endorsement signal the early shaping of political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State, with party stakeholders rallying behind continuity in leadership.
