A female medical doctor identified as Dr Vwaere Diaso, has been reported to have died after being trapped in an elevator that crashed from the 10th floor of Lagos General Hospital building in Odan area of Lagos Island.

It was gathered that the victim who was a graduate of Babcock University had two weeks to complete her housemanship died in Lagos Island General Hospital due to negligence and poor management of the facility.

According to findings, the unfortunate incident took place on Monday night.

A worker in the hospital identified as, Olanrewaju Aiyepola, who responded to the unfortunate incident stated that she was aggrieved because “we have complained for a long time about this elevator. We have manoeuvred, managed and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it. Till it killed one of us.”

Another source said, “She entered the elevator at the doctors’ quarters to collect her food from a dispatch rider who was waiting for her downstairs.

“She was in the elevator when it crashed from the 10th floor to the ground. She was rushed to the emergency ward where she passed away. We have been complaining about this malfunctioning elevator for the past one year and nothing was done about it.”

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement from the hospital management was  released while all calls to the hospital contact number on 08104982407 were unanswered.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the passing of  Diaso, describing her death as shocking and a colossal loss to the health sector in the state and Nigeria as a whole.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on his verified social media handles yesterday, said he had taken immediate action to initiate a thorough investigation into the cause of the ugly incident.

He  commiserated with the deceased family, friends and colleagues, particularly the Nigeria Medical Association, Medical Guild, doctors, and healthcare professionals in Lagos State.

He said: “I was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, a dedicated medical professional whose life was taken due to a mechanical failure within the elevator at the Doctors’ quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island. It is distressing to think that such a promising young doctor had her life cut short in such a devastating manner.

“As a parent myself, I cannot help but feel the pain and sorrow that Dr. Diaso’s loved ones must be experiencing during this difficult time. My heart goes out to her parents, family members, friends, and colleagues who are grieving this profound loss.
