Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday unveiled the iconic Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, saying the sculpture is  a powerful symbol of Lagos’ rich cultural identity and enduring heritage.

In his address during the unveiling ceremony, the governor said the event, though modest, was deeply significant as it celebrated the essence of the Eyo Adimu Orisa Festival, one of Lagos’ most revered cultural traditions.

He applauded the creator of the monument and renowned artist, Dotun Popoola, for using art to project Lagos as a symbol and custodian of culture.

According to him, the Eyo festival represents unity, history and continuity, adding that his administration remains committed to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the state for future generations.

In his welcome address, the chief executive officer and centre director of the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Qudus Onikeku, said the monument, standing at 32 feet on a six-foot base, was designed to narrate the historical significance of the Eyo festival in Lagos.

He disclosed that the centre is also planning a documentary on the Eyo tradition, which will feature a respected custodian of Yoruba culture, Erelu Abiola Dosumu.

Also, the Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos, Abiola Dosumu, applauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for his sustained efforts in preserving Lagos’ cultural heritage, while also acknowledging the administration’s achievements in infrastructural development across the state.

Earlier, the creator of the Eyo Monument, Dotun Popoola, said the sculpture was executed as a commitment to the promotion of Yoruba culture and tradition. He expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the opportunity and support that made the project a reality.

The unveiling of the monument further reinforces Lagos’ position as a hub of culture, history and tourism, with the John Randle Centre serving as a focal point for the preservation and celebration of Yoruba heritage.
