* Says earlier position vindicated

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unite and begin preparations for victory in the 2027 general elections following last Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership crisis.

Saraki, in a statement issued by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said the verdict should serve as a rallying point for reconciliation and rebuilding within the party.

He noted that the judgment vindicated his long-held position that the March 29, 2026 national convention in Ibadan should not have been held, stressing that an interim arrangement would have helped the party avoid protracted litigation and a difficult reconciliation process.

According to him, he had consistently advised key stakeholders against proceeding with the convention and reiterated the same position to the PDP elders’ committee led by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, Wakilin Adamawa, when they sought his views.
Saraki said:

“Now that we have ventilated our views, exhausted all legal channels, and the apex court has delivered its verdict nullifying the Ibadan convention and all actions arising from it,

while affirming the Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara-led National Working Committee as the recognised leadership of the party by law and by the Independent National Electoral Commission, there is only one PDP.

“We should all unite and work for the success of our party across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.”
He urged party members to shift focus from internal disputes to rebuilding the PDP into a strong and credible platform.

“Our dialogue should now centre on strengthening the party and positioning it as the most credible alternative for Nigerians seeking good governance,” he said.

Saraki added that those who lost in court should see the moment as an opportunity to contribute to rebuilding efforts.

“As for many of us, our objective of preserving the PDP as a viable platform for members to contest elections has been achieved. We are glad that the party will be on the ballot in 2027,” he stated.

He further called on aggrieved members to return to the fold, stressing that the PDP is now better positioned than other opposition parties.

“As of today, PDP stands as the only alternative platform whose internal challenges have been largely resolved, while other opposition parties remain entangled in disputes that could affect their participation in the 2027 elections,” he added.

Saraki congratulated members of the National Working Committee on the outcome and charged them to prioritise unity, discipline, rule of law, and democratic principles.

“I urge the leadership to focus on building a united, stable, and progressive party capable of securing victory in 2027,” he said.
