As schools resume across the country, the Parent-Teachers Association of Nigeria (PTA) has urged the federal and state governments to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

The national president of the PTA, Danjuma Haruna, who spoke to LEADERSHIP yesterday, advised that the security of students and teachers should be prioritised.

Haruna emphasized that schools must be equipped with adequate teaching and learning materials, including classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and computer labs, to provide a safe and conducive environment for both students and staff.

He explained that the PTA is coordinating with school-level, local government, state, and national bodies to ensure all schools are ready for reopening, especially regarding security and educational preparedness.

Recalling previous collaborations under the Safe School Programme, Haruna said the association has worked with security agencies, community leaders, and youths to educate students on how to respond safely in emergencies, stressing that these measures aim to protect lives rather than create fear.

The PTA president disclosed plans to meet the Minister of Defence to strengthen security measures ahead of resumption, focusing on both day and boarding schools, and reiterated proposals to relocate vulnerable rural schools to urban areas where security supervision is more effective.

Haruna also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that security agencies are proactive in protecting students and teachers.

He urged state governors to use security funds transparently and prioritize the safety of schools and their communities.

He further stressed that the responsibility of government is to proactively secure learning environments so that parents can have confidence in the safety of their children.

He reaffirmed PTA’s commitment to collaborating with governments, security agencies, and communities to safeguard schools and guarantee uninterrupted learning for Nigerian children.
