Unconfirmed number of persons have been reported killed after unknown gunmen attacked Afor Market Junction in the Nawfia community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Sunday.
Residents described scenes of panic and chaos as the attackers allegedly opened fire on unsuspecting members of the community.
Some victims were said to have died from gunshot injuries, while others fled the area for safety.
A resident said, “The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing many people. Nobody knows the reason behind the attack; it has left our community shaken.”
Other residents who spoke on the incident said they were still in shock, with many calling for increased security presence in the area.
An eyewitness said, “It was chaos. The attackers came out of nowhere in a commando-like fashion and started shooting indiscriminately.”
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that investigations have commenced.
“The police have launched an investigation and are working to apprehend the perpetrators. We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that the culprits will be brought to justice,” the source said.
Video footage of the incident circulating online showed residents running for safety while some victims were seen lying in pools of blood.
Confirming the incident, the President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, said security agencies had been contacted and investigations were underway.
“This evening, I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at Afor Market Junction in Nawfia community. The incident resulted in multiple casualties caused by unknown assailants.
“I strongly condemn this senseless act and the attempt to disrupt the peace of our community. I have contacted the relevant security agencies, and investigations are ongoing.
“I urge all Ndi Nawfia to remain calm, stay vigilant and cooperate with security operatives as they work to restore normalcy. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and we remain committed to protecting lives and maintaining peace in Nawfia,” Okoye said.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
