The general director of  Scripture Union Nigeria, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, has been abducted by unknown gunmen.

Cosmos was reportedly kidnapped alongside seven other persons on the Imo–Anambra States’ border axis while returning to Ibadan, Oyo State, after participating in the Scripture Union Campus Fellowship national conference held at Camp of Faith, Okigwe, Imo State.

A bishop and former presidential candidate, Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, announced the abduction of Cosmos and others in a statement signed on her behalf by Joy Wellington.

Adesanya-Davies expressed grief and concern over the incident.

“According to reports currently available, the affected group was travelling back to Ibadan, the national headquarters of Scripture Union Nigeria, after the conference when communication with their vehicle was reportedly lost along the Imo–Anambra border axis.

“Among those reportedly affected is Miss Tomisin Abolarin, a student leader and national secretary of Scripture Union Student Fellowship Nigeria,” Adesanya- Davies said.

She described the incident as painful and disturbing, particularly because “the affected individuals had gathered for Christian fellowship, spiritual growth, mentorship, and youth development. The Scripture Union (SU) is the origin of the rest of us; as such, this attack is significant – it’s crossing the line.”

“Moreover, this sad development is deeply troubling and touches the heart of every peace-loving Nigerian. It is painful that citizens travelling after a faith-based gathering should become subjects of fear and uncertainty. Our prayers and thoughts remain with the affected families and the entire Scripture Union community,” she added.

Adesanya- Davies stated that the recurring insecurity affecting highways and communities across the country demanded renewed commitment and coordinated action by all stakeholders.

She called on security agencies to intensify ongoing efforts and ensure the safe return of all those reportedly affected.

She also appealed to Christian leaders and churches across the country to continue in united prayer and peaceful intercession, urging government authorities to strengthen protective measures for travellers and religious gatherings.

She encouraged members of Scripture Union Nigeria and the broader Christian community not to lose hope in the circumstance.
