The Senate will on Wednesday, July 24, hold a special session in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13 in at the age of 82.
In a tribute to the former leader, the Senate said the session would reflect on Buhari’s contributions to national development and his enduring legacy in Nigeria’s political history.
This came just days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held a similar session last Thursday.
During the FEC event, President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari’s leadership style, describing him as a man who “led the country with restraint, governed with dignity, and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint.”
The Daura, Katsina State-born former Nigerian leader who died in London was buried on July 15, 2025 in his hometown, in a ceremony attended by dignitaries from within and outside the country.
He remains Nigeria’s second-longest-serving leader, having served first as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Meanwhile, the Senate has debunked viral reports claiming that it has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria.
Reacting to the rumours during plenary on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review has received numerous proposals, saying none has reached the stage of approval.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” Akpabio said.
The clarification came after Senator Abdul Ningi raised concerns over social media reports suggesting that new states had been approved, prompting some communities to begin convening meetings in anticipation.
