Services Resume After Fire Outbreak At Abuja Train Station

Operations at the Idu Train Station in Abuja have been restored following a fire outbreak that damaged some electrical installations at the facility.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), which confirmed the incident, said there was no loss of life and assured passengers that train services along the Abuja-Kaduna route remained unaffected.

The fire, which occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, affected the station’s low-voltage electrical room.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP Friday on the phone, the NRC spokesperson, Callistus Unyimadu, said the incident was promptly brought under control by maintenance personnel.

Unyimadu said “preliminary inspection showed that some electrical supply cables connected to the control panels were damaged, while the station’s alternative solar power system remained unaffected.”
He said power was subsequently restored to the station’s lifts and escalators, with five of the six facilities operational.

The NRC spokesperson stressed that the incident did not disrupt the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, adding that scheduled services continued as normal.

“Importantly, the incident has no effect on Abuja-Kaduna Train Service operations, and scheduled train services will continue as normal,” Unyimadu stated.

He explained that the NRC technical team was conducting further assessments to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the permanent restoration of the affected electrical installations.

Unyimadu also disclosed that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) had been notified to provide the necessary technical support and intervention.

The NRC assured passengers that appropriate measures were being taken to maintain the safety and smooth operation of the station and train services, and promised to inform the public when the minor repairs are complete.
