Nigerian rapper and singer Shallipopi has opened up about the reason behind his transition from rap music to singing.
The 26-year-old artiste, born Crown Uzama, revealed during an appearance on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast that he embraced Amapiano mainly for financial reasons.
According to Shallipopi, although rap music was what first made him fall in love with music, Amapiano has proven to be more commercially rewarding.
“I have been rapping for a while. I am a trap star. They made me do Amapiano. It is Amapiano that brings food to the table, so that we will do it. I will drag it with them,” he said.
The singer also explained that this was part of the reason he rejected the Headies Award for Best Rap Song, noting that he did not want to be boxed into the rap category alone.
Shallipopi’s comments have sparked conversations among fans about the growing influence of Amapiano in Nigeria’s music industry and the pressure on artistes to embrace more commercially successful sounds.
