Dr. Abubakar Ahmed, a lecturer at the Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin Kowa, Gombe State, has regained his freedom after 21 days in a correctional facility in Bauchi.

His detention followed the circulation of his seven-year-old social media post involving Shamsuddeen Bala Mohammed, the son of the Bauchi State governor.

Shamsuddeen had filed a criminal complaint alleging defamation, injurious falsehood, and criminal intimidation under the Bauchi State Penal Code Law (2022).

Ahmad was arrested after honouring a police invitation and remanded in prison on charges bordering on alleged defamation, injurious falsehood, and criminal intimidation by Justice Kawu Yarima of the Bauchi State High Court, who presides over Court 15. Justice Yarima’s recent Thursday ruling, denying bail to Dr Abubakar Ahmad, has generated public outcry.

Barrister Ahmed Hassan, the lecturer’s counsel, confirmed his release to LEADERSHIP on Wednesday. He said his client was granted bail on the condition that he provide two sureties who are residents of Bauchi State, a requirement that has been met. Before his release, the lecturer reportedly developed a threatening health condition while in detention. His family had urged the Bauchi State government to intervene and ensure he received urgent medical care. The case has been adjourned until July 6, 2025, for hearing.
