Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District and a governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has formally withdrawn from the party’s governorship primary election scheduled for May 21, 2026, citing alleged breaches of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and constitutional provisions guiding internal democracy.

The development was contained in a press statement issued by his Special adviser on media and communications, Comrade Sabo Muhammad, and made available to journalists in Bauchi on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Senator Buba’s decision followed what he described as unresolved internal crises within the party, particularly the leadership disputes affecting key positions in the State Executive Committee, including the offices of State Secretary and Organising Secretary.

Sabo noted that these challenges worsened during the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses, which he alleged were marred by irregularities and legal disputes.

The statement further explained that despite several attempts by stakeholders to resolve the issues amicably, no meaningful progress was achieved, creating what it described as a persistent crisis of confidence within the party structure in the state.

The statement also referenced the APC Constitution, particularly provisions that emphasize internal democracy, discipline, and adherence to the rule of law, arguing that the ideals which guided Senator Buba’s participation in politics had been undermined.

The statement also recalled directives attributed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urging party leaders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants during the primaries, warning against actions capable of weakening internal cohesion and democratic processes.

However, Senator Buba alleged that the conduct of the APC primaries across various levels in Bauchi State did not reflect these principles. He claimed that the process was characterised by irregularities, lack of transparency, and the absence of credible electoral procedures.

He further alleged that electoral officials were not visibly present at designated venues, while results were allegedly predetermined and announced without proper voting procedures.

According to him, this situation raised serious concerns about the credibility of the entire process.

The senator also raised a series of questions regarding the logistics of the primary election, including the identity of electoral officers, the location of polling and collation centres, and the distribution of electoral materials, questions he said remained unanswered at the time of his withdrawal.

Following extensive consultations with supporters, political associates, family members, and stakeholders, Senator Buba stated that he had no option but to withdraw from the governorship primary election under protest.

He described the decision as a matter of principle, stressing that democratic processes must be guided by law, fairness, and transparency, rather than the influence of a few individuals.

Senator Buba urged his supporters and well-wishers to remain calm and steadfast, expressing confidence that justice would ultimately prevail, while entrusting the outcome of the situation to divine will.
