Against the backdrop of some needless criticism, the National chairman of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa ‘iqamatis Sunnah, JIBWIS Nigeria, Sheikh Dr. Abdullahi Bala Lau has reaffirmed that the Qur’anic convention was a noble initiative, and every genuine Muslim has an obligation to support it.

Sheikh Lau, has once again, demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the advancement of Islam and the Quran in Nigeria.

The Qur’anic convention is a noble initiative designed to strengthen the place of the Quran in Nigerian society. It aims to encourage memorisation, proper recitation, and deep understanding of the Holy Book, there by fostering a more knowledgeable and spiritually grounded Muslim community.

At a time when the moral fabric of society is being tested, initiatives like this should not only be supported but also promoted with vigour.

Unfortunately, some Muslims, for reasons that are difficult to explain, have been very critical of this initiative of hosting Quranic convention.

After a wave of criticisms and unfounded accusations, Sheikh Lau finally addressed the concerns surrounding his support for the Qur’anic convention.

Speaking during a jumaat khutbah at the JIBWIS headquarters jumu’at mosque in Utako. Abuja, Sheikh Lau’s message was clear: ” Supporting the Qur’anic convention is not a betrayal but an obligation for every true Muslim.”

Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau’s support for this noble cause is rooted in the fundamental teachings of Islam which emphasise the importance of preserving and spreading the knowledge of the Quran. Instead of questioning his sincerity, critics should recognise that he is acting in accordance with Islamic principles.

In the face of criticisms, Sheikh Bala Lau remained patient, allowing the truth to unfold in due time. Many mistook his silence for guilt or compromise, but as history has shown, those who are steadfast in their beliefs do not rush to respond to baseless accusations. Sheikh Bala Lau’s decision to address the issue at the appropriate time demonstrates wisdom and a deep understanding of leadership in Islam.

The Quran itself teaches patience in the face of adversity:
” And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.” ( Quran 11:115 ).

Sheikh Bala Lau’s resilience in upholding the truth should serve as an inspiration to all. Instead of attacking those who support Islamic causes, Muslims, should unite in strengthening the Quran’s role in society.

The Qur’anic convention is not a personal project or a political movement — it is a religious duty. Those who have hastily criticised Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau should take a step back and reflect. Are their objections based on knowledge and sincerity, or are they driven by misconceptions and misinterpretations? Supporting a cause that promotes the Quran is an obligation, not an option.

Islam encourages unity and the pursuit of knowledge. The prophet Muhammad, May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: ” The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it. ” ( Sahih Al- Bukhari ).

Every true Muslim should stand behind initiatives that promote Islamic education and the Quran. It is time to put aside baseless accusations and embrace the collective responsibility of ensuring that the Quran remains central in our lives and communities.

Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau has spoken not out of compulsion, but out of duty. Let us all follow his example and support what is right.
