The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday held its North-East zonal congress in Gombe, affirming party leaders adopted through a consensus arrangement, with Barrister Idris Shuaibu emerging as zonal vice chairman and Baba Ali as zonal secretary.

Reading the list of elected officers, chairman of the North-East Zonal Congress Committee, Simon Nguam, declared other zonal leaders as; Takfur Dauda as legal adviser, Nitte Amangal as publicity secretary, Joseph Mwandale as youth leader, Haruna Tata Budua as leader of persons with disabilities (PWD), Hajiya Lumde Abubakar as woman leader, and Abubakar Adamu Musa as organising secretary.

The adoption of the consensus candidates was moved by former senate president Senator Ahmed Lawal, and seconded by House of Representatives Chief Whip, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, with delegates unanimously approving the motion.

In his opening remarks, Yobe State governor and chairman of the APC National Reconciliation Committee, Mai Mala Buni, described the North-East as a stronghold of the party and a model for peaceful internal democracy.

Buni said the congress was in line with the party’s constitutional provisions for electing zonal officers and praised stakeholders for adopting consensus across ward, local government, and state congresses in the zone.

He noted that the North-East remains a major stakeholder in Nigeria’s politics, recalling that the region produced Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and currently has the vice president, alongside five APC governors.

The governor urged party members to sustain unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the need to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates.

The congress was attended by governors and top party stakeholders from across the North-East, including governors of Gombe, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno and Taraba states, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar, Senator Shehu Buba, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Senator Ahmed Lawal, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and other party stakeholders from across the region.
