Sokoto State Government, has commenced Oral Cholera Vaccination, OCV, campaign following the confirmation of cholera cases in Dange Shuni and Goronyo local government areas of the state.
The vaccination exercise, which began after the outbreak was confirmed, is being supported by UNICEF and other development partners.

Speaking to journalists on the measures taken by the Ministry of Health, the State Immunization Officer, Malam Bakar Garba, said the campaign is targeting over 650,000 people aged one year and above as part of efforts to curb the spread of the disease within the affected LGAs and across the state.

He described cholera as a highly communicable disease transmitted through contaminated food and water, and urged the public to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene, drink safe or boiled water, and seek immediate medical attention for any diarrhea or cholera-like symptoms.
Malam Garba also commended traditional and religious leaders for their support towards the success of the campaign.

He announced that the exercise has already achieved 79% coverage within just four days, attributing the progress to high community acceptance in both LGAs.

Highlighting the level of engagement, Malam Garba, noted that over 200 individuals were vaccinated at the Qur’anic School of Malam Adamu in Kanwuri Area of Fajaldu Ward, Dange Shuni LGA, while more than 1,300 pupils at Sahabi Dange Model Primary School expressed readiness to receive the vaccine.
