To save children from preventable but deadly diseases, the Sokoto State government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has intensified efforts to promote vaccination against measles-rubella, polio and other childhood-killer diseases.
This was the focal point at a stakeholders’ mobilisation meeting of media practitioners, social media influencers, healthcare professionals and government officials gathering to deliberate on innovative ways of educating parents about the life-saving importance of routine immunisation.
At the meeting held at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, the health promotion officer, Sabi Shehu said vaccination remains the most effective weapon against the spread of these diseases.
Shehu stressed the need for parents to make their children available for routine vaccination and reassured parents that the vaccines were safe and effective.
“These diseases can have severe consequences, including pneumonia, brain damage and even death,” he said.
The vaccination will kick off today at Bodinga local government area and will be conducted simultaneously in all the 23 local government areas in the state.
According to Shehu, “The goal is to vaccinate approximately two million children, a major undertaking that requires the support and cooperation of parents, healthcare workers, and community leaders
“The vaccination drive is critical in preventing the spread of measles-rubella and polio. By taking advantage of this opportunity, parents can help protect their children and contribute to a healthier community.
“For the Sokoto State government and UNICEF, the initiative is not just a health programme but a lifeline for children, ensuring they grow healthy, safe and free from preventable diseases,” he added.
