FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Flamingos Target Semi-final Spot As Venezuela Stand in Their Way

Nigeria’s Flamingos will put their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 campaign on the line when they face Venezuela in a potentially explosive quarter-final encounter on Sunday, with both sides targeting a place in the last four.

The encounter presents another major test for coach Hakeem Busari’s side, who have recovered from an opening-day setback to establish themselves as serious contenders for a semi-final place.

After a difficult start that saw Nigeria lose 2-1 to Poland in their opening Group B fixture, the Flamingos responded with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico before producing one of the impressive performances of the group stage with a 3-1 defeat of defending champions North Korea.

That victory secured Nigeria’s progression to the knockout stage and provided a significant confidence boost ahead of the Round of 16.

The Nigerian youngsters maintained their momentum with a hard-fought victory over Mexico, booking their place in the quarter-finals and moving one step closer to their ambition of going further than their previous outing.

However, Venezuela represent a different challenge, with the South Americans arriving with renewed confidence following their impressive elimination of former champions Germany.

Venezuela returned to the competition after a 10-year absence and endured a mixed group-stage campaign.

They began with a 2-0 defeat to France but revived their hopes with a crucial victory over African opponents Zambia to keep their tournament ambitions alive.

Their biggest statement, however, came in the Round of 16, where they stunned Germany 1-0 to secure a quarter-final ticket.

That result underlines the danger they pose to Nigeria, particularly as they seek to maintain their impressive record at the competition.

Venezuela have reached the semi-finals in their last two appearances at the tournament and will be determined to extend that sequence by securing a third consecutive last-four qualification.

For the Flamingos, the immediate challenge will be to contain Venezuela’s attacking threat while maintaining the confidence and attacking intensity that have characterised their recovery since the opening defeat to Poland.

Nigeria’s victories over North Korea and Mexico have demonstrated their ability to compete against established youth football nations, but the quarter-final will demand greater discipline, concentration and efficiency in front of goal.

Busari’s players must also avoid the lapses that characterised their opening match against Poland, as Venezuela have already shown against Germany that they can punish opponents who fail to take their opportunities.

With a semi-final place at stake, Nigeria will be counting on their collective strength, attacking quality and growing tournament experience to overcome the South Americans.

A victory would take the Flamingos into the last four and bring them closer to another memorable campaign on the global stage.

The quarter-final is scheduled for 6pm local time (7pm Nigerian time) on Sunday, November 1, at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Rabat.

For the Flamingos, the mission is clear: overcome Venezuela, keep Nigeria’s hopes alive and take another step towards the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
