The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its strong commitment to public safety, consumer protection, and the promotion of fair trade practices in Nigeria.

The director-general and chief executive of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke stated this during the destruction of substandard products in Lagos. The destroyed products included substandard stuffed tires, steel doors, and spark plugs, which posed serious health and safety risks to Nigerians.

Representing the SON DG, his special assistant for strategic support, Manji Lawan urged consumers to always demand certified, quality products.

He stated that the destruction of these substandard products aligns with SON’s mandate as outlined in the SON Act No. 14 of 2015. This exercise is part of a broader effort to protect Nigerian consumers from harmful and counterfeit products.

“As an agency, we take our responsibilities seriously, and today’s action clearly demonstrates our commitment to eliminating dangerous, unregulated goods that threaten the safety, health, and security of our citizens. Under this Act, SON has the authority to regulate and enforce product standards, ensuring that only safe, high-quality, and certified products are available for Nigerian consumers,” he stated.

Okeke stressed that, by taking decisive action, SON reinforces the importance of complying with product quality standards in Nigeria, emphasising that manufacturers, importers, and vendors must prioritize the safety and welfare of the Nigerian public.

“This serves as a firm reminder to all stakeholders in the Nigerian market—from producers to consumers; that SON will continue to ensure that substandard goods have no place in our country. We are dedicated to creating a safer and more reliable market in Nigeria,” he added.

According to him, today’s event is not just about destroying a few products; it sends a clear message to anyone attempting to undermine public safety and disrupt the integrity of the market: SON will not waver in its duties.

We will persist in identifying, seizing, and destroying substandard products, holding accountable those who endanger the lives of Nigerians.

Okeke commended the diligent efforts of the Inspectorate Department and all SON officials who tirelessly work to maintain market safety and ensure that products meet the highest standards.

He also expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation of law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Customs Service, in the fight against substandard products.
